Class 2-3: Verbs that End with a Vowel Followed by a Consonant

Rules:

If the last three letters of the verb ends with:

consonantvowelconsonant

and it is a one-syllable verb:

1. Double the consonant and add an ed” to make the verb past tense.

2. Double the consonant and add an “ing” to make the verb continuous.

Examples:

One-syllable words

1. drag – dragged – dragging

2. stop – stopped – stopping

3. drop – dropped – dropping

1. Keep the same spelling of the verb, and add an “ed” to make the verb past tense.

1. droop – drooped– drooping

If the verb ends with:

and it is a two-syllable verb:

1. Add an ed” to make the verb past tense.

2. Add an “ing” to make the verb continuous.

Two-Syllable Words

1. open – opened – opening

2. visit – visited– visiting  

3. answer – answered– answering
