Class 3-4: Using the Present Progressive with Always

The boy assumed the balloons were for him.
Rules: When explaining everyday or continuous actions, the word always is used. When using always, the sentences are referring to present time, and usually simple present is used. (Example 1) English speakers may use always with the present progressive to complain, or to show annoyance or anger towards something or someone. (Example 2) Furthermore, forever and constantly are also used with present progressive to show annoyance or anger towards something or someone. (Example 3) |
Examples: 1. I always go to the library every day after school. 2. My son is always getting in trouble. 3. He is always/constantly getting in trouble. |
More Examples: 1. Statement of fact: My son always gets in trouble. 2. Opinion: My son is always getting in trouble. |

Exercise 1: Pretend your friend Michael has just bought a dog. Michael is stating problems that are wrong with his dog. Write Michael’s complaints using the present progressive with always.
