Definition:

Relative pronouns connect other noun/pronoun clauses with other parts of a sentence.

Relative Pronouns:

who, whom, what, which, whose, whoever, whomever, whatever, whichever, that

Examples:

1. The person who spilled the coffee must pick it up.

2. The students that did not pass the English exam will not pass the class.

 

Relative Pronouns Rules

Who – is used to ask about people.

Whom – can be used to ask about people. It is less usual and more formal than who.

What – is used to ask about objects and people.

Which – is used to ask about objects or people.

Whose – is used to ask about the possession of a noun.

Whoever – is used to ask about people, but you are very unsure about the person you are asking about. Whoever is only used for people not objects.

Whomever – is used to ask about people, but used when you want to know who is responsible for a specific action.

Whatever – is used to ask about objects, but you are very unsure about the object you are asking about. Whatever is only used for objects not people.

Whichever – is used to ask about objects or people, but you are very unsure about the person or object you are asking about.

That – is used to talk about one specific person, place, thing, or idea.

Exercise

Exercise 1: Using the pronoun definition list provided above choose the correct relative pronoun. 1.  The person who is driving must remember to fill the car with gas. 2.  The person ________ I saw yesterday was tall with dark hair. 3.  The direction ________ I want to go is ________ direction you want to go. 4.  The person ________ shoes are off must put them on. 5.  The man ________ he admires is his father.

Exercise 2: Underline the relative pronoun in each sentence.

1.  The book that you told me to read is really funny!

2.  This is a warning that is difficult to ignore.

3.  I’m not sure whose story is the scariest.

4.  Because I won first prize in the contest, I can choose whichever prize I want.

5.  I rented the apartment that is on Liberty Avenue.

6.  I can’t believe I ran into the man who found my missing purse.

7.  Is there a place where I can buy a new hat?

8.  I don’t know what happened.

9.  This is the man whose wife was my teacher.

10.  Bring me the book that is on the table.
