Question words are used to get information. They include who, what, when, where, why, how, which and whose.

Question Word: Who Rules: Who is asking about a specific person and is used as the subject of the sentence. A singular verb almost always follows who in the sentence. Examples: Who took my pencil?

What

What can be used as the subject of the sentence. (Example 1) What can be used as the object of the sentence. (Example 2) What can come before a noun in a sentence. (Example 3) What kind of is used when a speaker needs to make a decision about the type of object they want. (Example 4) What + do is used to ask for information about the subject. (Example 5) What+ verb can be used to ask information about an action that is being performed. (Example 6) 1. What’s wrong? 2. She said what? 3. What time is it? 4. What kind of cereal do you want? 5. What does she want? 6. What is she doing upstairs?

A speaker uses how to describe directions. (Example 1) A speaker also uses how to understand the amount of time it takes to do an action. A speaker uses which, when he/she is making a choice from a specific number of possibilities.

Exercise 2: You have been given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to travel back in time and interview Ben Franklin. Read the paragraph below, and answer the questions.

I am so excited! I just created a time machine, and it is going to let me go back in time and interview Ben Franklin. I’ll be traveling back to July, 1776, and will talk to him just after the Declaration of Independence would have been signed. I will be in Philadelphia. Even though Franklin has done a lot in his life, I want to talk to him about the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence. I’m a little worried that he will be scared of me if tell him I’m from the future, but once I explain everything to him, I actually think he’ll be really excited. I will just sit him down and tell him the truth. He was an inventor, so I’m sure he will be fascinated by my time machine. He will probably have a lot of questions for me. I wonder if he will want to come back to the future with me. I would for sure get an “A” on my history project if I brought him in to class to talk.

My paper is due on January 17.  I chose Ben Franklin because his birthday is actually also on January 17.  Plus, he’s really interesting.
