Definition:

A proper noun names a specific person, place, thing or idea. A proper noun is always capitalized. 

 

Examples:

Person: Tom

Place: United States of America

Thing: Statue of Liberty

Idea: Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity

Common nouns are nouns naming a general person, place, thing, or idea. Common nouns are not capitalized.

Person: student

Place: school

Thing: desk

Idea: thinking about going to a party.
