Class 1-3: Plural Nouns Final -s and -es

Rules:

The plural form of most nouns are created simply by adding the letter -s.

More than one apple = apples

More than one pencil = pencils

More than one computer = computers

Examples:

Question: Do you like apples? Answer: Yes, I do.

Question: Can I have two pencils? Answer: Absolutely.

Question: What’s wrong with their computers? Answer: I have no idea.

Words that end in -ch, -x, -s or -s–like sounds will require an es for the plural:

More than one fox = foxes

More than one kiss = kisses

More than one match = matches

1. There are many foxes in the field today.

2. My grandmother loves to give me kisses.

3. The soccer team has many matches.

Rules:

Words that end in -y:

When the last two letters of a word are consonants, change the ending to -ies. More than one lady = ladies. (Example 1 and 2)

When the last two letters of a word end with a vowel followed by a consonant, change the ending to -s.

More than one toy = toys. (Example 3)
