Pronouns are nouns used to replace a noun in a sentence. In American English, pronouns are used so you do not need to continue using the same noun many times in a sentence or conversation. The noun that the pronoun is referring to is called an antecedent.

Note: pronouns are also used if the speaker or writer does not know the exact name of a person, place, thing, or idea but the speaker or writer wants to talk about it.
