Definitions:

Count nouns are any nouns that you can count one by one.

You add an -s at the end of the word to make a count noun, plural. A count noun may have a or an in front of it.

Examples:

Singular

a chair

a cup

a book

Examples:

Plural

a few chairs

five cups

three books

Example Sentences:

1. I bought a few chairs.

2. He asked for five cups of soda.

3. I read three books at the library.

Noncount nouns are nouns that you cannot count one by one.

You do not add an -s at the end of the word to make a count noun, plural. A count noun may not have a or an in front of it.

With noncount nouns use a little, some, too much, or a lot of.

Correct: Can I have some water? Incorrect: Can I have a few water?

Correct: I want a little milk. Incorrect: I want three milk.

Correct: Don’t use too much sugar. Incorrect: Don’t use four sugar.
