Definition:

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask a question.

Interrogative Pronouns:

who, whom, what, which, whose, whoever, whomever, whatever, whichever

Examples:

Question: Who went to the store?

Answer: Tom went to the store.

Question: Which of these shirts do you like?

Answer: I like the one on the left.

 

Interrogative Pronouns Rules

Who – is used to ask about people.

Whom – can be used to ask about people. It is less usual and more formal than who.

What – is used to ask about objects and people.

Which – is used to ask about objects or people.

Whose – is used to ask about the possession of a noun.

Whoever – is used to ask about people, but you are very unsure about the person you are asking about. Whoever is only used for people – not objects.

Whomever – is used to ask about people, but used when you want to know who is responsible for a specific action.

Whatever – is used to ask about objects, but you are very unsure about the object you are asking about. Whatever is only used for objects – not people.

Whichever – is used to ask about objects or people, but you are very unsure about the person or object you are asking about.
