Rule: 

You will often see an expression of place after the auxiliary verb be and the main verb ending with -ing. An expression of place always starts with a preposition.

Examples:

1. Mike is playing at the playground.

2. Seth is sleeping on the couch.

3. Eric was studying at his desk.

4. Emily was reading on the porch.

Sentence Structure Formula for Expressions of Place:

subject + verb/verb phrase + prepositional phrase.

1. It is raining in Seattle.
2. A baby is crying on my shoulder.
3. Birds fly in the sky.
