Class 2-3: Verbs that End with a Vowel Followed by a Consonant

He closed the door on his tie.

Rules: If the last three letters of the verb ends with: consonant→vowel→consonant and it is a one-syllable verb: 1. Double the consonant and add an “ed” to make the verb past tense. 2. Double the consonant and add an “ing” to make the verb continuous.	Examples: One-syllable words 1. drag – dragged – dragging 2. stop – stopped – stopping 3. drop – dropped – dropping consonant →vowel →consonant drag: d = consonant | r = consonant | a = vowel | g = consonant

If the verb ends with: vowel→consonant and it is a two-syllable verb: 1. Add an “ed” to make the verb past tense. 2. Add an “ing” to make the verb continuous.	Two-Syllable Words 1. open – opened – opening 2. visit – visited– visiting   3. answer – answered– answering vowel →consonant open: o = vowel | p = consonant | e = vowel | n = consonant
